Tenzin Phuntsho ICT Integration

                                       Reflection on October Online lesson

With continuation of the closure of classes from PP-VIII, the use of ICT integrated lesson delivery is on full swing. Despite many obstacles related to the availabilities of the materials, we are doing best to overcome all the challenges.

With the passage of time, both teacher and students have got used to with the usage of the social media plate forms as a means to deliver the lesson. The flow is much better compared to the earlier days. I as a teacher had also improved a lot in the field of developing lessons such as PPT, video tutorials and stimulations etc. It’s a wonderful experience to use all those learnt during the residential class.

This time I have focused on the mathematics for VII and the topic is Volume of a rectangular Prism. I chose we-chat and google classroom to deliver my lesson which is much friendly way of communication with the students. Video tutorials was preferred over any other form of ICT because it was less burden for the teacher and easier for the students to comprehend the information. But to the contrary, it is challenging during the preparation phase. Preparation of power point presentation, animating it and editing through camtasia is not easy. But over the course of preparation, the work became much easier and got experience to use camtasia.

After my presentation the feedbacks that I have received from the students was encouraging. I need not have to repeat content. Those under performing students could view the video over and over again until they are clear about the topic. All most all the activities were done it correctly and I did not have to instruct them again and again. It has eased the burden and could also safe time. I could use the time for correction and giving feedbacks for further improvement.

Online classes are helping students learn, refer the materials, explore and discuss with the teachers. In practical, the responsibilities of children’s learning are shared between the teachers and parents and that is the charm of the situation.

Reflection on Integrating ICT for online teaching

                                                                   Reflection

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can enhance the quality of education in several ways: by increasing learner motivation and engagement and by enhancing teacher resources. ICTs are also transformational tools. It allow for a higher quality lessons through collaboration with teachers in planning and preparing resources. ICT technologies encourage independent and active learning, and students’ responsibility for their own learning which truly constructs the teaching- learning process. The Online teaching enhances learning opportunities for school children to become quite popular as of late. Since mobile phones have already found their way into their hands, we-chats, goggle classrooms are being used to supplement classroom learning.

Among many lessons, I would like to reflect on the Mathematics lesson which I have delivered to class V on 20th September 2020. The topic was multiplying decimal; sub topic was multiplying by 0.1, 0.01, or 0.001 with the objective, "calculate the products involving 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 correctly.” I taught the lesson through video tutorial. The video clearly demonstrated multiplying by moving the digits in the product towards right using place value chart. This short video tutorial was posted to class V we-chat group and Google classroom. For the first time, I taught my lesson in class V using ICT, that was a short tutorial video using Camtasia studio 6.0 after closing the school from 18th March, 2020 throughout the country because of Covid- 19. I noticed my children were getting excited as soon as I sent my tutorial video in our class forum. Though I have conducted the lesson many times in the forum with materials and short video clips, but this time it was a tutorial video which made my children very exciting.

As I started instructing them to watch the video, I started receiving so many positive comments like Sir, next time also we want the video like today. So by going through their comments   I noticed them enjoying the lesson. The positive side of teaching ICT is, the students could catch up very easily. It also minimized my work load since I sent the same video to two sections at a time and that saved my time too. I did not have to explain much because they could understand much better by watching the video. As a follow up activity, I gave them some writing activity. Each child could do the activity without the teacher’s guidance.

This kind of teaching is only applicable for places where there is strong network. Students who do not own the gadgets and poor network fail to participate in the learning activities. Some students and parents couldn’t download videos on time; At times the authentic of the students work is questionable. Another biggest challenge has been limited engagement in the online classes. Even the student who is usually talkative and engaged in the face to face classes, do not engage as much in the online class. These are some of the challenges that we face as a teacher.

Overall, teaching of online classes apparently going very smoothly. Almost 90% of the students could make it to online teaching. Though the learning scenario is different from the way they used to have, they are able to give prompt responses. Therefore with the development of the technologies, there are various ways we can integrate ICT in our teaching so that our learners are equipped with different skills and knowledge for 21st century. Henceforth, I would deliver the lesson with Video tutorial and short video clips

ICT Reflection

MATHEMATICS LESSON USING VIDEO CLIPS

Since the country is lockdown and the schools are closed, so all the teachings are done online either in goggle classroom or in wechat. So the ICT integration in teaching and learning plays greater roles in teaching and learning process. ICT integration in lesson provide  teachers with integrative teaching methods that motivate students learning, support their independent learning and active participation in the discovery of different  concepts and topics, and, as a result, help them have deeper understanding of the concepts.

I started my online class immediately after the school closure to keep my students in track with their learning. I did my online class through the goggle classroom and WeChat forum as informed to the parents and students.   At first, it was not easy due to so many obstacles. Some parents own a smartphone where their children can get access to online teaching. On the other hand, few parents do not own a smartphone which deprived their child of online teaching and learning. To those unfortunate children, the school has compiled a list and sent it to the Ministry of Education for the supply of Self Instructional Manual. There were a lot of issues pertaining to online teaching through Google classroom and Wechat. Many of the students did not know how to go on goggle classroom and had to depend on Wechat. Some students have to depend on either father or mother’s phone. As such, some students failed to carry out the assigned activities on time and respond on time because they get access to the phone only when their parents returned home after work.

I had a mathematics lesson with class VI students on “how to calculate the area of a circle”. Since I can’t teach them like I do in classroom teaching so I choose to download videos from YouTube about the topic. I shared the videos through goggle classroom and wechat forum and ask students to watch. Watching videos are much powerful than the teacher lecturing and demonstrating lesson in the classroom. The students learning of concepts and topics are much better through watching videos as they enjoyed and arouse much curiosity to learn through the videos without the teacher’s help.

After watching videos, I assigned them some activities based on above topic (How to calculate the area of a circle).  I found that most of the students performed the activity very well. Therefore, with the development of technologies, there are numerous methods in which we can integrate in our teaching so that our learners are equipped with skills and knowledge required for the 21st century even during pandemic situation. Nothing would stop us from teaching and learning if we know how to integrate ICT in teaching and learning.
